Bromate is considered a category 2B carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Potassium Bromate is used as a flour improver in breads and wraps to strengthen and shorten baking time.
Bromine has a long list of symptoms that you just wouldn’t want your kids to have. These include: psychotic and other destructive mental health issues, fatigue, severe acne and other skin rashes, cardiac arrhythmias, and a loss of appetite. Bromine also competes for the iodine receptor sites, causing an iodine insufficiency. This leads to many thyroid related problems such as stunted growth, but also mental health disorders, and even hearing loss. So there are more than a few reasons to keep this away from your kids.
Banned all through Europe, China, and Canada, but okay here in the States. The best you can do is to look for unbromated flour, but keep in mind that California is the only state with a warning label for Potassium Bromate, and in most states it is not compulsory to include it in ingredients label. This is why we need to tell food companies, and to some extent the government, that we will not put up with this type of stuff in our food.
